Links for Life Information

    About the Event

The Links for Life golf tournament, one of the GTAs premier golf tournaments is celebrating its seventh anniversary! Every year, approximately 144 golfers participate in a round of golf to support West Park Healthcare Centre's Area of Greatest Need.

You are invited on Thursday, June 9th, 2011 to hit the links at Eagles Nest Golf Club (rated #1 Best Public Course in GTA - SCOREGolf – Aug./Sept. 2009). Golfers will experience an exceptional day of golf on a course that has earned the accolade of "toughest challenge" and then relax and enjoy a full-course dinner with an exciting silent auction.

In 2010 proceeds from Links for Life were directed to one of West Park's Priority Programs, the Comprehensive Spasticity Management Program. About 191,000 adults suffer from spasticity in Canada with stroke as the leading cause. Spasticity results from damage to the brain that regulates muscles and controls voluntary movement often resulting in the muscles tightening up like a coiled spring. The debilitating condition is also experienced by patients who suffer from multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury and cerebral palsy.

    Your Support at Work

Since 2005, Links for Life has contributed more than $1.2 million to support West Park Healthcare Centre’s specialized programs and services. This year, with your support, we will invest in West Park’s Comprehensive Spasticity Management Clinic.

    What is spasticity?

Spasticity results from damage to the brain that regulates muscles and controls voluntary movement, which often causes muscles to tighten up like a spring. The common and debilitating condition is experienced by patients who suffer from multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, stroke or other neurological conditions. In Canada, 300,000 people are currently living with the effects of a stroke. Of that number, four out of 10 will develop spasticity.

    Leading Expertise in Spasticity Management

West Park’s has the largest adult spasticity clinic in the country, having grown by 500 per cent since 2003. The clinic features a full range of specialized, interdisciplinary care for adults with spasticity that encourages independence and productive living in the community. West Park’s plans to improve access to treatment for those suffering from spasticity by doubling the number of patients it currently serves over the next three years.

West Park is also home to two of Canada’s top experts in spasticity management and is designated as a centre for the training of physicians in spasticity management nationwide.

    Impact on Patient Lives

PatientUsing botulinum toxin type A as an innovative therapy, West Park helps patients regain mobility and rebuild independence so they can perform everyday activities such as getting dressed or buying groceries.

Scott Plummer was an avid football player before he suffered a massive stroke seven years ago. He was told he’d likely never walk again. But the active 50-year-old is now back on his feet and dreams of one day running. Almost eight years after his stroke, Scott can now walk a mile a day, under 20 minutes and without a cane.

Everyday, West Park helps patients like Scott on the road to recovery. You can help too. Donate today.
